The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Nasarawa State chapter, has called for a full investigation into an attack on one of its members during a recent screening exercise in Akwanga.

A suspected hoodlum reportedly damaged a contestant’s vehicle at the venue, where aspirants were being screened ahead of the union’s state elections.

Union chairman, Mr Sunday Daniel, in a communique released in Lafia on Monday, said the act was unacceptable.

“We strongly condemn the attack on our member’s vehicle,” Daniel said. “We also denounce the assault on the National Returning Officer and the destruction of electoral materials by some contestants. These actions are disgraceful and cannot be tolerated.”

JUSUN has urged security agencies to identify and arrest all those involved.

“We are appealing to Her Lordship, the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, and all relevant security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the union stated.

Beyond the violence, the union also addressed what it described as an illegal attempt to hijack the leadership process. It warned members to ignore any congress meetings called by individuals outside the union’s official structure.

“Let it be clearly stated that only elected JUSUN officials have the power to convene a congress, as provided under Rule 17(1a and b) of our constitution,” the statement read.

It added that a caretaker committee could only be formed by the National Working Committee if an election failed to hold, in line with Rule 6(a and b) of the union’s constitution.

“We urge members and the general public to disregard any claims or invitations issued by unauthorised persons. The process must follow due constitutional procedures.”
