Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned Nigerians to exercise extreme caution when interacting with people they meet online, urging the public to immediately report anyone who solicits money through digital platforms.
The Commission said any individual who requests financial assistance shortly after establishing contact online should be treated as a potential fraudster and reported without delay.
“If someone you meet online asks you for money, stop all communication and report the person to the EFCC immediately,” the agency said, reiterating the need for greater public vigilance against the growing threat of internet-enabled fraud and romance scams.
The EFCC stressed that early reporting can help prevent financial losses and assist law enforcement in tracking down cybercriminals who exploit unsuspecting victims through social media, messaging apps and dating platforms.
