Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has petitioned security agencies and the public over what he describes as escalating threats to his life and family while holidaying in his hometown.

In a detailed petition dated December 29, 2025, Ejiofor, a native of Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Anambra State, detailed a series of incidents that he claims indicate a “sinister motive” to endanger his household during the Christmas and New Year period.

Ejiofor explained that, amid ongoing security challenges in Anambra, he requested and received official protection from the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG), also known as Udo ga Achi. Bona fide operatives arrived at his residence in their marked vehicle, armed and properly identified.

However, within 48 hours, the AVG commander who deployed them reportedly received persistent calls demanding their immediate withdrawal. The calls allegedly involved a state lawmaker, the AVG state commander (referred to as Agunechemba), and the President General of the Oraifite Improvement Union. Ejiofor claimed the callers threatened that a group would forcibly disarm the operatives if the order was not obeyed.

According to him, pleas to allow the security detail remain until after the festive period were rejected, citing instructions from an unnamed “Oga” in Oraifite. To prevent confrontation, Ejiofor advised the operatives to withdraw, leaving his residence without protection.

He further stated that intelligence later reached him suggesting plans to mobilise police for a nighttime raid, based on false allegations that the AVG personnel were impersonators carrying AK-47 rifles and terrorising the community. A subsequent police fact-finding visit reportedly confirmed that the residence was calm and that the operatives had already withdrawn, exposing the claims as misinformation.

Ejiofor said he has formally notified relevant authorities of the alleged principal orchestrator and warned that any harm to him or his family should be traced to specific individuals. He stressed that the threats have persisted despite earlier public alerts.

The latest alarm follows Ejiofor’s earlier statements in late December 2025, in which he accused named local figures, including a lawmaker and community leaders, of involvement in intimidation campaigns.

Ejiofor, who is widely known for representing IPOB and its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu, has faced past security incidents. In 2019, his Oraifite residence was invaded, resulting in loss of lives and extensive property damage, after which he later secured court-awarded compensation.
