A team of international lawyers has launched a coordinated global legal campaign aimed at overturning the life sentence handed to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The move, confirmed by sources close to the legal team, involves taking Kanu’s case beyond Nigeria’s borders to international courts and human rights bodies, citing alleged violations of due process and international law.

According to the lawyers, the strategy will focus on Kanu’s arrest, extradition and trial, which they argue breached established legal standards and Nigeria’s obligations under international conventions. The legal action is expected to include filings before regional and global judicial institutions, as well as formal petitions to international human rights organisations.

The team maintained that the life sentence imposed on Kanu was politically motivated and legally flawed, insisting that the process leading to his conviction did not meet the threshold of a fair trial. They expressed confidence that sustained international legal pressure could compel a review or reversal of the judgment.

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted on terrorism-related charges, a decision that has continued to generate intense debate both within Nigeria and among members of the international community.

While the Nigerian government has repeatedly defended the conviction as lawful and in line with national security interests, Kanu’s supporters argue that the case symbolises broader concerns about human rights, judicial independence and the rule of law.

As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian authorities have not officially responded to the latest international legal push. However, observers say the development could further internationalise the long-running legal and political controversy surrounding the IPOB leader.
