President Bola Tinubu has requested the Senate’s confirmation of new chief executives for the country’s top oil regulatory bodies. This follows the resignations of Farouk Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The President’s formal request was conveyed in separate letters to the Senate on Wednesday, December 17th.

The departures of Ahmed and Komolafe mark a pivotal transition. Both officials were originally appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, following the landmark enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) which established the two regulatory agencies to oversee the reformed oil and gas industry.

A statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development. The move signals a new chapter in the administration of Nigeria’s vital petroleum sector, though the names of the proposed successors were not immediately disclosed.

The resignations come at a critical time for Nigeria’s energy landscape, as the government pursues enhanced efficiency, increased investment, and oil and gas industry.

The Senate is expected to commence confirmation proceedings for the new nominees promptly.
