Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that Nigeria will hold its next presidential election on February 20, 2027, formally kick-starting the countdown to the country’s most consequential political contest.
The electoral body disclosed the date on Thursday, saying the decision aligns with Nigeria’s constitutional timeline and its broader electoral roadmap.
INEC said preparations for the poll would begin in earnest, including voter registration updates, stakeholder engagements and the release of a detailed timetable for party primaries and campaign activities.
The announcement is expected to set political manoeuvring in motion, as major parties and prospective candidates begin early consultations and strategic planning ahead of the vote.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has witnessed fiercely contested elections in recent years, with issues such as security, the economy and governance dominating public debate. Observers say the 2027 race is likely to be shaped by growing youth participation and rising demands for electoral transparency.
INEC has assured citizens of its commitment to delivering a credible, transparent and peaceful election, urging political actors to conduct themselves responsibly as the country moves towards another pivotal democratic moment.
