A Nigerian political figure has accused security authorities of attempting to unlawfully arrest him at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, shortly after his return from Cairo, Egypt.
In a statement released by his legal team on Monday, the politician said the incident amounted to an abuse of executive power and a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
“My lawyers have issued a statement condemning the illegal attempt to arrest me today at the Abuja airport upon my arrival from Cairo,” he said. “Our country must outgrow executive overreach and deliberate violations of due process.”

The lawyers described the action as unconstitutional and warned that continued harassment of political actors threatens Nigeria’s democratic institutions. They called on relevant authorities to respect court processes and fundamental human rights.

The development comes amid growing concerns over alleged intimidation of opposition figures and critics of government, with civil society groups repeatedly urging authorities to uphold democratic norms and the separation of powers.
There has been no official response from security agencies as of the time of filing this report.
Observers say the incident is likely to intensify debates around civil liberties, executive authority, and the shrinking space for dissent in Africa’s most populous nation.
