Traditional rulers from across the Igbo-speaking region have committed to delivering at least 70% of the South East’s votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The Ndi Igbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Council, led by Chairman Eze Nnamdi Oforegbu, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu. The monarchs cited President Tinubu’s positive impact on the region’s economy and specifically thanked him for establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
Eze Oforegbu, speaking on behalf of the council, expressed gratitude for the SEDC, believing it will significantly boost infrastructural development in the South East. They also commended Deputy Speaker Kalu for his role in sponsoring the bill that led to the commission’s creation.
“We are here to thank you. You’re doing more than we expected—that has never happened before,” Oforegbu stated, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the government’s initiatives. “We assure him of 70 percent of our votes in the next election.”
Hon. Benjamin Kalu welcomed the traditional rulers’ support, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to rewarding loyalty and his recognition of the South East. He pointed to key appointments of Igbo individuals and assured the monarchs that their support would be acknowledged.
“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is an example of loyalty and a rewarder of loyalty,” Kalu said. He also pledged the parliament’s commitment to securing a constitutional role for traditional rulers, acknowledging their vital contributions to national unity and security.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized the significance of the region’s votes, stating, “We will no longer waste our votes; we will invest them.”
