Niger Delta leader Asari-Dokubo has issued a fiery warning vowing to use lethal force against anyone he describes as a “terrorist” attempting to enter Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

Speaking during a live-streamed address to his supporters on Tuesday, Asari-Dokubo said he would not tolerate any form of armed incursion into the city, insisting that community-backed vigilance was necessary to maintain security in the oil-rich region.

“We will not fold our arms while violence is imported into our land,” he declared, adding that his group would respond “decisively” to threats against residents.

The comments come amid rising political tension and concerns over security in several parts of the Niger Delta. While Rivers State authorities have boosted policing in recent weeks, local leaders say communities remain on edge following sporadic clashes in surrounding areas.

Human rights advocates have often criticised Asari-Dokubo’s rhetoric and his involvement in security matters, warning that inflammatory statements risk escalating tensions or encouraging vigilantism. However, his supporters argue that his interventions have helped deter criminal activity in past years.

State officials have not yet responded to his latest remarks, but analysts say any attempt by non-state actors to assume security roles could complicate ongoing efforts to stabilise the region.

As the political environment in Rivers State remains fluid, Asari-Dokubo’s warning is likely to add fresh pressure on security agencies to assert control and reassure residents of their safety.
