In a dramatic escalation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has been slapped with a no-fly ban by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for obstructing a ValueJet aircraft. The minister branded KWAM1’s actions as “recalcitrant” and “utterly unacceptable,” likening the incident to a hostage crisis.
The row erupted when KWAM1, a close ally of President Bola Tinubu, allegedly refused to hand over a flask suspected of containing alcohol. Tensions soared as he reportedly spilled its contents—later confirmed as alcohol—on a ValueJet officer. When denied boarding, the musician took a defiant stand, positioning himself in front of the aircraft to block its taxiing, as captured in a viral video. The footage shows airline staff pleading with him to clear the tarmac while pilots cautiously attempted to manoeuvre around him.
Keyamo condemned KWAM1’s conduct, stating, “Whether he carried water or alcohol is irrelevant. Physically blocking an aircraft is reprehensible, akin to holding passengers hostage.” He also criticised the pilots for attempting to taxi before security had removed the unruly passenger, upholding their suspension by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). However, he questioned the fairness of punishing only the crew while initially sparing KWAM1.
“Fairness must prevail,” Keyamo declared. “What applies to the goose must apply to the gander.” He has ordered the NCAA to place KWAM1 on a no-fly list pending a thorough investigation, with a stern warning to all airlines—domestic and international—to comply or risk losing their operating licences.
