A Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to rule on a fresh legal application seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force to reopen investigations into the controversial death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The case, brought by the Break the Silence Foundation, challenges the outcome of previous police investigations, arguing that critical leads and key individuals connected to the late singer’s final moments were not thoroughly examined.

Justice James Omotosho is presiding over the matter, which seeks an order directing the Inspector-General of Police and other law enforcement authorities to conduct what the applicants describe as a comprehensive and impartial reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Mohbad’s death in September 2023 triggered nationwide outrage and sparked the #JusticeForMohbad campaign, with fans and civil society groups demanding accountability and transparency. Despite multiple investigations and arrests, questions surrounding the 27-year-old artist’s death continue to fuel public debate.

The foundation maintains that a renewed probe is necessary to restore public confidence and ensure that all relevant evidence is properly scrutinised. The court’s decision is expected to determine whether law enforcement authorities will be compelled to revisit one of Nigeria’s most closely watched and emotionally charged cases in recent years.
