Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially left the ruling party to join the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), thewhistler.ng

Adamu, who was received into the ADC on Thursday in Keffi, Nasarawa State, explained that his decision was driven by principle and conscience.

Appointed APC National Chairman in March 2022, the veteran politician resigned from the position in July 2023, shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration.

Addressing a crowd of APC loyalists at the defection event, Adamu criticized the APC for straying from its founding ideals. He accused the party leadership of sidelining experienced members, suppressing dissent, and weakening internal democracy.

Adamu has a long political career. He served as governor of Nasarawa State from 1999 to 2007 and was elected Senator for Nasarawa West in 2007 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. In 2014, he was among ten PDP senators who defected to APC.

Since stepping down as APC chairman under circumstances considered unclear by many, Adamu maintained a relatively low profile.

Prior to the APC’s 2022 presidential primaries, Adamu publicly endorsed former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate. However, President Bola Tinubu won the APC ticket, defeating Lawan and 12 other contenders, before clinching the presidency.

Political analysts and insiders have linked Adamu’s resignation as APC chairman to his perceived opposition to Tinubu’s presidential ambitions during the 2023 election cycle.
