The Federal Government has appointed Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, widely known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security protocols, following the controversy surrounding his behaviour at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, made this announcement on Wednesday, stating that KWAM 1’s flight ban would be reduced to just one month. The decision was part of the government’s resolution to address recent cases of misconduct at Nigerian airports.
Keyamo confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) would be working alongside the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to engage KWAM 1 in promoting acceptable conduct within the aviation sector.
“After his public apology and demonstration of penitence, we are pleased to reduce his flight ban. The FAAN will also collaborate with him to use his influence to promote better airport security awareness,” said Keyamo.
The announcement follows the August 5th incident in which KWAM 1 was accused of obstructing a ValueJet aircraft’s movement and carrying a prohibited flask. While security personnel initially believed the flask contained alcohol, KWAM 1 later clarified that it was water for medical purposes.
The NCAA had initially banned him from flying for six months and filed a criminal complaint. However, the government has now opted to withdraw those complaints, citing compassionate grounds.
The musician has since apologised, expressing regret for his actions and clarifying the misunderstanding. While the government has shown clemency, Keyamo reiterated that the aviation industry remains committed to enforcing its safety and security laws.
