The Federal Capital Territory Administration has extended the third term of the 2024/2025 academic session for public primary schools in Abuja by five weeks. The decision follows a prolonged industrial action by members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which paralysed academic activities for over three months.
The strike, which began on 24 March 2025, was only suspended on 9 July after high-level interventions. In response, the Minister of the FCT approved a revised school calendar, pushing the term’s end date to 29 August 2025.
A circular signed by Dr Alhassan Sule, Acting Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), confirmed that schools across the six area councils—Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali and Gwagwalada—are expected to comply with the directive.
“To compensate for the academic gap, primary schools will operate for an additional five weeks, with extended periods for pupils in Primary 4 to 6,” the circular stated.
The FCTA stressed the importance of stabilising the academic calendar and ensuring pupils recover essential learning time before the next session begins.
Head teachers and education officials have been instructed to enforce the directive immediately.
