In a thrilling Spanish Super Cup final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, FC Barcelona orchestrated a stunning comeback to defeat arch-rivals Real Madrid 5-2, reclaiming the prestigious title.

The match began unfavorably for Barcelona fans as Vinicius Jr. capitalized on a mistake by Marc Casado, setting up Kylian Mbappe for a rapid counterattack. Mbappe skillfully outmaneuvered Alejandro Balde to put Real Madrid ahead just five minutes into the game.

Barcelona, however, quickly regrouped. In the 22nd minute, young sensation Lamine Yamal embarked on a dazzling run, artfully placing the ball past Thibaut Courtois to level the score. The momentum shifted further in Barcelona’s favor when Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty in the 37th minute, following a foul on Gavi by Eduardo Camavinga.

Before halftime, Barcelona extended their lead with goals from Raphinha, who expertly headed a cross from Jules Kounde, and Alejandro Balde, who benefited from an assist by Raphinha to make it 4-1.

Emerging from the break with determination, Barcelona continued their dominance as Raphinha netted his second goal of the match, outmaneuvering Real Madrid’s defense to push the score to 5-1.

Real Madrid managed to pull one back through Rodrygo’s free kick after Wojciech Szczesny received a red card for a foul on Mbappe outside the penalty area, but Barcelona held firm to secure their record 15th Super Cup title. This victory marks the first trophy for Barcelona under coach Hansi Flick, who succeeded Xavi Hernandez in the summer.

The win came on the heels of Barcelona’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in a La Liga Clasico in late October, which had put them six points clear at the top of the table. However, a series of disappointing results in November and December left them trailing behind Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid by five points and leaders Atletico Madrid by six, with all teams having played 19 matches.

Barcelona will look to build on their Super Cup triumph as they return to La Liga action on January 18, with an away match against Getafe, aiming to close the gap at the top of the league standings.
