A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Nigerian power minister Saleh Mamman on charges of money laundering, in a landmark ruling delivered on Thursday.
Presiding judge James Omotosho found Mamman guilty on all 12 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Delivering judgment, Omotosho ruled that the anti-corruption agency had successfully proven the former minister’s culpability “beyond reasonable doubt”, paving the way for sentencing in one of Nigeria’s high-profile corruption prosecutions.
Mamman, who served as minister of power under former President Muhammadu Buhari, had been accused of involvement in the diversion and laundering of public funds during his time in office.
The conviction marks another major victory for the EFCC as authorities intensify efforts to prosecute corruption cases involving former public officials and politically exposed persons.
