South Africa’s High Commissioner to Nigeria has disclosed that more than 80 individuals have been arrested in connection with acts of Afrophobia, as the country intensifies efforts to tackle attacks targeting fellow Africans living within its borders.
The envoy said the arrests demonstrate the South African government’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible for violence and hate crimes against foreign nationals are brought to justice, while reaffirming the country’s stance against discrimination and intolerance.
Speaking during an engagement with stakeholders, the High Commissioner stressed that South Africa does not condone Afrophobia or any form of xenophobic violence, noting that law enforcement agencies have been directed to investigate and prosecute offenders without fear or favour.
He acknowledged that incidents of violence against foreign nationals, including Nigerians, have strained relations in the past, but maintained that the government remains determined to strengthen social cohesion and protect the rights of all lawful residents irrespective of their nationality.
According to the envoy, the arrests are part of broader measures aimed at preventing further attacks, improving community relations, and promoting peaceful coexistence among South Africans and foreign nationals.
He also called for continued cooperation between African countries to combat misinformation, foster unity, and address the root causes of tensions that often fuel hostility against migrants.
The envoy reiterated South Africa’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that every individual living in the country enjoys equal protection under the law, regardless of their country of origin.
His remarks come amid renewed calls for stronger action against Afrophobia and greater collaboration among African governments to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of citizens residing across the continent.
