A contractor has told an Abuja High Court that former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, asked him to pay ₦6 million into his wife’s bank account, alongside other financial demands, including his children’s school fees.
The contractor, Oluwatayo Fashogbon, Chief Executive Officer of Portal Realities Limited and JTF Global Links Limited, made the allegation on Thursday while testifying as the first prosecution witness in Umar’s ongoing trial before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja.
Umar is facing a four-count charge instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of nepotism and conferring corrupt advantage on himself.
During his testimony, Fashogbon told the court that the former CCT chairman requested that ₦6 million be paid into his wife’s bank account.
The witness also reportedly gave details of other financial requests allegedly made by Umar, including payments relating to his children’s school fees.
The allegations form part of the prosecution’s case against the former tribunal chairman.
Umar is standing trial over the charges brought by the EFCC, which is seeking to establish that he abused his position and conferred undue benefits on himself.
The case is expected to continue as the prosecution presents further evidence and witnesses to substantiate its allegations.
Umar is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
