The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, in what is being seen as a significant move to navigate the party’s lingering leadership crisis ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting, held at Jonathan’s residence in the Federal Capital Territory, is the first major consultation by the Turaki-led leadership following a recent Federal High Court ruling that dismissed a suit filed by the PDP Board of Trustees seeking recognition of its interim National Working Committee by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Neither the party nor the former president disclosed details of the discussions. However, party insiders said the talks focused on the implications of the court’s decision and possible pathways to resolving the internal dispute that has deepened divisions within the opposition party.
Turaki led the delegation to Jonathan’s Abuja residence, although the identities of other members of the team were not made public. No official statement was issued after the meeting.
The consultation comes at a critical time for the PDP, which has remained embroiled in a prolonged leadership tussle, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership. The crisis has raised concerns over the party’s preparedness for future elections and its ability to present a united front.
Political observers say Jonathan’s intervention could prove influential, given his stature within the PDP and his role as one of the party’s most respected elder statesmen. However, it remains unclear whether the former president will play an active role in efforts to reconcile the warring camps.
