Edo Police Push for Peace Accord Ahead of August 16 By-elections

The Edo State Police Command has taken a crucial step in ensuring peaceful and credible elections for the upcoming by-elections on August 16, 2025. All candidates contesting for the House of Representatives and Senatorial seats will be required to sign a Peace Accord in a bid to foster a violence-free environment.

Police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, made the announcement, stating that the Peace Accord aims to promote mutual respect among the political contenders and encourage their supporters to refrain from violence during the election process.

“In a proactive effort to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process, the Edo State Police Command has invited all candidates contesting for the House of Representatives and Senatorial seats in the forthcoming August 16, 2025, by-elections to participate in the signing of a Peace Accord,” Yamu explained.

The event, set for Thursday, August 14, 2025, will also include political party chairmen and will take place at the Nigeria Police Edo State Command Headquarters in Benin City at noon.

According to Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, the aim of the Peace Accord is to ensure that all participants respect democratic principles and abstain from any actions that could disrupt the peace. He urged all political actors to avoid hate speech, violence, and vote-buying, underscoring the police’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all parties.

“We are committed to upholding the law and ensuring that the elections are carried out with integrity, providing a secure environment for everyone involved,” Agbonika added.

This move reflects the Edo State Police’s dedication to safeguarding the electoral process and preventing any disturbances during the by-election, highlighting the importance of democratic participation in the state.
