The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies following what the regional bloc described as an attempted coup and an unconstitutional interference in the country’s political leadership.
In a strongly worded communiqué issued on Monday, ECOWAS condemned the disruption of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and called for the immediate and unconditional release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who was reportedly detained amid the political turmoil.
The bloc warned that any further escalation would attract additional sanctions, insisting that stability and democratic governance remain non-negotiable principles for member states. It also urged the military and political actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect civilian authority and refrain from actions that could deepen the crisis.
ECOWAS said it is monitoring developments closely and is prepared to deploy a high-level mediation team to restore normalcy and safeguard the country’s democratic institutions.
The suspension will remain in place until the country fully returns to constitutional order.
