The Governor of Kano State has explained his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move was guided by the will of the people and a desire to accelerate development across the state.

Speaking in Kano on Monday, the governor said his political realignment followed weeks of wide-ranging consultations with traditional leaders, party stakeholders, youth groups and community representatives.

According to him, the overwhelming feedback from these engagements was a call to join the APC in order to align Kano with the federal government and unlock greater opportunities for infrastructure, security and economic growth.

“Politics is about the people,” the governor said. “After consulting widely, it became clear that my constituents want Kano to be part of the centre. This decision is about service, progress and positioning our state for faster development.”

He dismissed claims that the defection was motivated by personal ambition, insisting it was a strategic step aimed at delivering tangible dividends of democracy, including improved roads, healthcare facilities, education and job creation.

The governor also pledged to work closely with party leaders and elected officials to ensure a smooth transition, while assuring residents that governance would remain inclusive and people-centred.

Political analysts say the move could significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape, given the state’s influence in national elections and its large voting population.

Supporters of the governor have welcomed the decision, describing it as timely and pragmatic, while opposition figures have criticised the defection, accusing him of abandoning his original mandate.

Despite the mixed reactions, the governor maintained that his priority remains the welfare of Kano residents, adding that his administration would continue to pursue policies that promote unity, stability and sustainable development.
