Enugu was thrown into mourning on Wednesday morning after a truck belonging to the Dangote Group reportedly crushed members of a family and others to death along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.
The fatal crash occurred at Four Corner, in Nkanu West Local Government Area, leaving an unconfirmed number of victims dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses told The Whistler that at least two members of the same family were among the casualties, although the exact death toll remains unclear. A viral video from the scene showed distressed onlookers lamenting the loss of lives and calling on the Dangote Group to urgently address the frequency of accidents involving its vehicles.
Outrage has since spread across social media, with many Nigerians condemning the recurring incidents.
Twitter user @Jamessurce2 wrote:
“Dangote trailer has done it again; this time, it claimed an entire family’s lives in Enugu State. Something must be done about these constant accidents by Dangote drivers. May their souls rest in peace.”
Another user, @unstudentz, added:
“Dangote truck reportedly crushed several people to death this afternoon at Four Corner, Enugu State.”
This is not the first time a Dangote vehicle has been linked to such a tragedy. Only weeks ago, another Dangote truck ran over 24-year-old Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna. The incident, which ultimately led to Otabor’s death, sparked outrage after it was revealed the driver did not possess a valid licence.
The latest incident has renewed calls for stricter regulation of heavy-duty vehicles and accountability on the part of the Dangote Group.
