A political rift has emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Atta, vehemently opposed any move to extend the tenure of the current Kano State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, for a fourth term. Atta issued a stark warning during a caucus meeting in Fagge Local Government Area, asserting that such a decision would trigger a serious crisis within the party.
Atta made it clear that he and his supporters would not tolerate any attempt to reappoint Abbas, emphasizing, “We will not take it lightly with anybody trying to return Abdullahi Abbas to office after the expiration of his tenure, because it violates the constitution of the party.” He further threatened that if Abbas were to be imposed on the party again, it would lead to mass defections, stating, “All of us will decamp from the party, and APC will crash and lose the 2027 elections. This is my message to anybody who cares to listen.”
The Minister criticized Abbas’s leadership style, describing it as “arrogant and misguided,” and blamed him for the party’s losses in the 2023 elections. “The same person has not changed; therefore, we are strongly warning that if Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance, everyone should consider the party losing 2027,” he added.
Atta recalled that the APC had initially secured victory in the governorship race with candidates Gawuna and Sule Garo, but alleged that Abbas’s divisive remarks contributed to the party’s failure to maintain its position.
Reports indicate that APC National Chairman, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, is considering reappointing Abbas, a move that has exacerbated tensions within the party. As the situation unfolds, the future of the APC in Kano appears uncertain, with potential ramifications for its performance in the upcoming 2027 elections.
