A Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest future presidential elections.

The case, which has reignited debate over constitutional term limits and political succession, seeks judicial clarification on whether Jonathan can lawfully return to the presidential race under the provisions of Nigeria’s Constitution.

By issuing the summons, the court has formally drawn both the federal government and the electoral commission into what could become a landmark legal contest with significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.

The development comes amid renewed speculation over Jonathan’s potential political future, despite the former president remaining publicly silent on any presidential ambition.

Legal analysts say the suit could test constitutional interpretations surrounding tenure limits, particularly in relation to presidents who completed the terms of deceased leaders before subsequently winning election.
