Nigerian singer Chike Osebuka has stirred controversy after declaring that marriage holds no value for him, insisting instead that financial stability brings him the happiness he desires.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the 32-year-old star bluntly described marriage as “a stupid step.”
“In my personal opinion, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my view. For me to be happy, I need a lot of money. This is not even canal; I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money,” Chike said.
The artiste, who gained national attention after his appearance on The Voice Nigeria and later established himself as a leading vocalist, admitted that he only saw music as a career after completing university. “I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living. I won’t say I knew before, because I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me,” he explained.
Chike also recounted his financial struggles, noting that he had to venture into acting to survive when music was not paying his bills. “It was a tough part, I even had to start acting for like two years,” he revealed.
His rejection of marriage has triggered wide debate online, reflecting a growing generational shift in Nigeria where young people increasingly prioritise wealth and personal fulfilment over traditional expectations of marriage and family.
Chike’s comments highlight the broader pressures of modern life, where economic realities, rising costs of living and changing cultural values are reshaping how Nigerians view relationships, stability and success.
