Head coach Eric Chelle has unveiled his final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, making decisive changes that recall experienced goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and in-form striker Paul Onuachu, while omitting former regulars Maduka Okoye and Tolu Arokodare. The list, confirmed on December 11, 2025, sets Nigeria’s course for the tournament, which runs from December 21 to January 18.
The squad composition reveals Chelle’s strategic blend, featuring three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, and nine forwards. This selection marks a pivotal moment for the Super Eagles, who will be chasing a fourth continental title—their first since 2013—after finishing as runners-up in the last edition.
Goalkeeping Gambit Sees Uzoho’s Recall
The most striking decision comes between the posts, where Francis Uzoho earns a dramatic recall after last featuring for the national team in March 2024. He joins a contingent that includes Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali, who is currently racing against time to prove his fitness, and the relatively uncapped Amas Obasogie of Singida Black Stars. The complete exclusion of Maduka Okoye, a fixture under previous managers, signals a clear and bold new direction from Chelle, placing his trust in a mix of past experience and current form.
Attack Reinforced by Onuachu’s Resurgence
The offensive line receives a significant boost with the inclusion of Paul Onuachu. The Trabzonspor striker, enjoying a prolific spell in Turkey, receives his first call-up under Chelle and adds a formidable aerial threat to a already loaded frontline. He joins reigning African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen, alongside dynamic wingers Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon. The attacking options are further deepened by the physical presence of Akor Adams, the creativity of Chidera Ejuke, the persistence of Cyriel Dessers, and the intriguing inclusion of Croatia-based newcomer Lawal Salim Fago.
Defensive Line Infused with New Blood
Chelle has moved to refresh the defensive unit, handing first-time call-ups to Blackburn Rovers’ full-back Ryan Alebiosu and Slavia Prague’s centre-back Igoh Ogbu. They will compete for roles alongside established names like Calvin Bassey, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Chidozie Awaziem, and the wing-back duo of Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi. The return of Zaidu Sanusi, if fit, provides additional experience and width on the left flank.
Midfield Stability and Fresh Invention
The core midfield retains its solid foundation with the Premier League experience of Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, complemented by the defensive acumen of Wilfred Ndidi and the energy of Raphael Onyedika. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru offers further creative depth. Chelle has also introduced new inventive possibilities, calling up Inter Milan’s promising teenager Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Israel-based Usman Muhammed, and former Flying Eagles standout Tochukwu Nnadi.
The Road Ahead in Morocco
Nigeria finds itself in Group C, where they will face Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. All their group stage matches will be played in the historic city of Fès. The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Tanzania on December 23, clash with North African rivals Tunisia on December 27, and conclude the group phase against Uganda on December 31.
In preparation, the team will set up a training camp in Egypt and is scheduled to play an unofficial friendly match against the Pharaohs on December 16. This camp will be crucial for integrating new faces and solidifying Chelle’s tactical approach.
