In a landmark move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s technological and engineering education sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the transformation of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa.
The upgrade, announced as part of the administration’s broader efforts to expand access to specialised higher education and develop skilled manpower for Nigeria’s industrial growth, marks a significant milestone for Nasarawa State and the country’s mining and engineering sectors.
The newly established university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence in mining, engineering, technology and related fields, providing advanced training, research opportunities and innovation-driven solutions to support Nigeria’s economic development.
The decision is also seen as a major boost to the Federal Government’s agenda of repositioning tertiary institutions to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy, particularly in areas of science, technology, engineering and natural resource management.
Stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a strategic investment that will enhance professional training, create more opportunities for young Nigerians and contribute to the growth of the country’s mining industry.
The Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, established to provide technical and vocational education, will now transition into a university with a wider mandate to offer degree programmes and conduct cutting-edge research in mining, engineering and technological disciplines.
The approval by President Tinubu represents one of the latest steps by the Federal Government to expand Nigeria’s higher education landscape and position institutions as key drivers of innovation, industrialisation and national development.
