The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, directing him to “take a bow” and assume office with immediate effect.

Shaibu’s confirmation followed less than an hour after the upper chamber cleared General Olufemi Oluyede for the post of Chief of Defence Staff, kicking off the vetting of President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed service chiefs. The screening and confirmation took place at the National Assembly complex in Abuja under heightened security, with senators holding a mix of open and closed-door sessions to assess the nominees.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the proceedings, described the exercise as a constitutional duty aimed at ensuring that only capable and patriotic officers are entrusted with national security. He urged restraint in public questioning, noting that more in-depth review would occur behind closed doors.

Senator Isah Jubrin of Kogi East, speaking in support of Shaibu, said he had known the officer for 30 years and praised his humility and professionalism. “Shaibu is humble and takes his job very seriously. I believe he has what it takes to move Nigeria out of the challenges the country is experiencing today,” Jubrin said.

The twin confirmations signal the Senate’s intent to expedite approval of Tinubu’s security appointments as the administration seeks to reshape the country’s military leadership amid ongoing security challenges.
