The six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have joined the ongoing strike action, deepening the industrial crisis confronting the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The development follows a nationwide directive by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and was confirmed by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), FCT chapter, after an emergency meeting held on Monday.
With the decision, all local government administrations within the FCT have effectively shut down, disrupting key services and administrative activities across Abuja. Offices at the area council secretariats were largely deserted as workers complied with the union’s directive.
NULGE officials said the move was in solidarity with organised labour and aimed at pressing home demands linked to workers’ welfare and outstanding obligations. They stressed that the strike would remain in force until further directives were issued by labour leaders.
The latest action adds to mounting challenges for the FCT Administration, as authorities grapple with maintaining essential services in the nation’s capital amid widening labour unrest.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the office of the FCT Minister, while residents braced for the impact of prolonged disruptions if the standoff persists.
