Liverpool’s promising right-back Conor Bradley faces months on the sidelines after the club confirmed he sustained a significant knee injury that will require surgery and rule him out for the remainder of the season.

The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international suffered the injury in the closing stages of Thursday’s 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, dealing a severe blow to both his club and country at a critical juncture of the campaign.

“Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury,” the English champions said in a statement released on Saturday. “Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation.”

The BBC reported that while the injury does not involve an anterior cruciate ligament tear, it does include damage to both bone and ligament, necessitating surgical intervention and an extended recovery period. The timeline effectively ends Bradley’s season and casts serious doubt over his availability for Northern Ireland’s crucial World Cup qualifying play-off matches in March, beginning with a trip to Italy.

The incident that led to Bradley’s injury sparked controversy during Thursday’s match when Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli attempted to push the defender off the pitch, mistakenly believing he was time-wasting. Martinelli subsequently apologised for his actions after the final whistle, acknowledging his error in judgement.

Bradley’s absence represents a significant setback for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who had viewed the young defender as the natural successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold following the England international’s high-profile departure to Real Madrid during the summer transfer window. Alexander-Arnold’s exit left a void at right-back that Bradley was expected to fill, but persistent injury problems have severely limited his impact throughout the current campaign.

Slot has frequently been forced to deploy midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in an unfamiliar right-back role due to Bradley’s unavailability, a makeshift solution that has disrupted the team’s balance and tactical flexibility. The latest setback means the Dutch manager will need to revisit his defensive options as Liverpool pursue silverware across multiple competitions.

The Merseyside club remain active on three fronts despite the injury blow. Liverpool currently sit fourth in the Premier League table as they chase down the title, are well-positioned to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and begin their FA Cup campaign with a home fixture against Barnsley on Monday evening.

For Bradley personally, the injury represents a cruel interruption to what had promised to be a breakthrough season. The Tyrone native established himself as one of the brightest young defensive talents in British football last term, impressing with his athleticism, defensive awareness, and growing attacking contributions. His performances earned widespread acclaim and reinforced Liverpool’s belief that they had secured Alexander-Arnold’s long-term replacement from within their own academy system.

Northern Ireland will also feel the loss acutely. Bradley has become an integral figure for his country, providing pace, energy, and defensive solidity on the right flank. His potential absence from the World Cup play-offs could prove decisive in Northern Ireland’s quest to reach their first World Cup finals since 1986, particularly given the formidable challenge posed by Italy in the opening play-off encounter.
