Some players of Nigeria’s Super Falcons have alleged that money was stolen from their wallets while staying at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of the start of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The allegations, which surfaced on social media through forward Esther Okoronkwo, have since been confirmed by the team’s media officer, who said the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities and is under investigation.
Several players of Nigeria’s Super Falcons have alleged that money was stolen from their wallets while they were lodged at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The allegations surfaced on social media after Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo claimed that cash was taken from her room while the team was preparing for the continental tournament.
In a series of posts shared on her Snapchat account, the AFC Toronto striker alleged that she initially believed $500 had been stolen from her wallet but later realised the amount missing was $700 after recounting her money.
“This hotel Marriott in Casablanca just stole about a lot of people’s money from their wallet! They just stole 500 USD from me. They stole a couple of dollars from my teammate,” she wrote in one of the posts.
She later corrected the amount, saying: “Guys, I did my calculations wrong. They actually stole $700, not $500 USD.”
Okoronkwo further alleged that members of the hotel’s housekeeping staff were responsible for the missing cash, claiming the thefts occurred while the players were away from their rooms.
“The cleaning people stole the money. They waited while we weren’t in the room to clean and steal the money,” she alleged.
According to the forward, when the players raised the issue with hotel officials, they were unable to provide satisfactory explanations.
“We started talking to them and they don’t have answers. They also started being disrespectful,” she added.
When PM News contacted the Super Falcons’ Media Officer, Mary Cathryn, she confirmed that the incident had been reported by members of the team.
According to her, the players have officially reported the matter to the relevant authorities in Morocco, and investigations are already underway.Latest world news
At the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Marriott Hotel Casablanca nor the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had issued an official public statement on the incident.
Despite the reported incident, preparations in the Super Falcons camp have continued without disruption as the team remains focused on its quest for another continental title.
The nine time African champions recently defeated Tanzania’s Twiga Stars 2-1 in a pre tournament friendly, with Okoronkwo scoring the winning goal to boost confidence ahead of the competition.
Nigeria will begin the defence of its WAFCON title against tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat before taking on Zambia and Egypt in the remaining Group C fixtures.
The Super Falcons are aiming to extend their dominance in African women’s football by winning a record 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
The outcome of the investigation by the Moroccan authorities is expected to provide more clarity on the allegations, while the Super Falcons will hope to put the incident behind them as they focus on reclaiming the continental crown.
