Former vice-presidential candidate Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2019 Nigerian elections, has officially announced his intention to contest the presidency in 2027. In a bold campaign promise, he pledged to significantly increase the wages of key public service workers.
Speaking to journalists during his campaign launch, Baba-Ahmed outlined plans to raise the salaries of the police, military, and teachers to no less than four times their current pay by June 2027.
“If I become the president, the police, the army, and the teachers will earn no less than four times their current pay by June 2027,” he said, adding that his previous experience as a presidential candidate equips him to lead the nation.
Baba-Ahmed also highlighted his independent political profile, noting, “I’m my own boss. I contested for the presidency before Peter Obi in 2019,” signalling his intention to chart a distinct path from his former running mate.
The announcement marks the start of what could be a highly competitive campaign, with Baba-Ahmed emphasising governance reforms and public sector revitalisation as central pillars of his platform.
Observers say his focus on security forces and education professionals may resonate with Nigerians frustrated by low wages and systemic challenges in critical sectors.
This development sets the stage for the 2027 presidential race, where Baba-Ahmed will seek to position himself as a candidate promising tangible economic relief and institutional reform.
