Nigerian politician Yusuf Datti has spoken candidly about the recent defection of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), highlighting internal party dynamics and ongoing tensions within the political landscape.

In remarks shared on Wednesday, Datti explained that he had engaged with Labour Party members to foster reconciliation ahead of Obi’s departure. While some members responded positively to his calls, others reportedly took offence and opted to leave the party.

“A group of political travellers, welcomed in 2022 with a presidential ticket, continued with their journey. This is a fact to keep in my mind in anticipation of their ever-ready hostile online attitudes,” Datti said, signalling his awareness of the sustained criticisms and social media attacks that often follow political realignments.

The former senator’s comments underscore the challenges faced by political parties in maintaining cohesion, particularly when high-profile figures shift allegiances. Datti’s reflection also hints at the potential for ongoing tension between LP loyalists and defectors, a pattern common in Nigeria’s fluid political scene.

Observers note that Obi’s move to the ADC has intensified debates around party loyalty, political strategy, and the influence of social media in shaping public perception. Datti’s remarks suggest that he anticipates a continuation of partisan and online hostilities as the next election cycle approaches.
