Prominent political figure Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has called on the Nigerian Senate to adopt a more rigorous and transparent approach in screening President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s newly submitted ambassadorial nominees, stressing that the nation’s diplomatic representation must be entrusted to individuals of proven integrity, competence, and patriotism.

In a statement shared via @politicsngr, Baba-Ahmed urged lawmakers to rise above partisan considerations and prioritise national interests during the confirmation process. He emphasised that Nigeria’s ambassadors play critical roles in shaping the country’s image abroad, driving economic diplomacy, and safeguarding the welfare of citizens overseas.

“This is not the time for perfunctory confirmation hearings,” Baba-Ahmed said. “The Senate must thoroughly scrutinise each nominee to ensure they possess the capacity and character required to represent Nigeria at the highest diplomatic levels.”

His remarks come as debate intensifies over the calibre, diversity, and political balance of the ambassadorial list submitted by the Presidency. Civil society groups and policy analysts have similarly expressed concerns about the need for merit-based appointments, especially at a time when Nigeria faces complex geopolitical and economic challenges.

Baba-Ahmed further noted that the Senate’s handling of the screening process will send a strong signal about its commitment to good governance, accountability, and institutional independence.

The Senate is expected to announce dates for the screening sessions in the coming days, during which nominees will be assessed on their professional experience, understanding of foreign policy, and readiness to engage in the evolving global diplomatic landscape.
