Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is ready to take over Ekiti State in the 2026 governorship election. He called on Governor Biodun Oyebanji to begin preparing his handover notes.
Atiku made the statement through Professor Bayo Fakunle, a former Dean at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, during the unveiling of the Ekiti chapter of the ADC over the weekend in Ado-Ekiti.
“I thank the people of Ekiti for standing with me in past elections. This time, it’s our turn to stand with you. The ADC will rescue Ekiti from hardship and offer real leadership,” said Fakunle, who represented Atiku at the event.
The event drew in big names from other parties. Prominent figures from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and even the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) announced their defection to ADC.
Among them was Professor Kolapo Olusola, former Deputy Governor and a PDP leader, who said the ADC had become the alternative platform for patriots ready to rebuild the country.
“This movement is not just for Ekiti. It’s about pushing out those who have hijacked and damaged the system. We’re here to restore sanity and prosperity to the people,” he said.
The defection wave also saw key aides and associates of past Ekiti governors jump ship. Loyalists of Ayodele Fayose, Kayode Fayemi, and Segun Oni were present at the event, despite the fact that all three former governors have at various times backed Oyebanji’s administration.
Those who have now pitched their tent with the ADC include former Deputy Governor Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka, former Chief of Staff Dipo Anisulowo, former Secretary to the State Government Modupe Alade, and former Head of Service Gbenga Faseluka.
