Ibrahim Dankwambo, ex‑Governor of Gombe State and current Senator representing Gombe North, reaffirmed the enduring respect and loyalty that many northern Nigerians hold for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Dankwambo emphasized Atiku’s continued role as a key political figure in the North, saying affectionately, “we love him” even as national political dynamics continue to evolve.

Dankwambo’s remarks come amid Atiku’s recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on July 14, 2025, and his engagement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition in preparation for the 2027 presidential race.

Despite criticisms and debates within political circles about his next steps, including proposals for a joint ticket with Peter Obi, Dankwambo’s comments suggest that Atiku’s base in the North remains intact, grounded in shared history and long-standing leadership credibility.

His statement also reflects broader considerations around regional influence and strategic alignments in national politics. As political elites navigate alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, Dankwambo’s praise highlights the ongoing appeal of established northern leadership, underscoring how Atiku’s regional legitimacy continues to shape opposition coalition dynamics and voter perceptions.
