Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that corruption and compromise with criminal elements would have no place in a government led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), delivering a strong anti-graft message at the party’s national convention.

Speaking on Tuesday, Atiku said any administration under the ADC would adopt a strict stance against corruption, warning that public officials would not be allowed to “get away” with abuse of office or collusion with criminal networks.

“Believe me, you can’t get away with corruption in the government of ADC. You cannot. You cannot get away with compromising with criminals and terrorists,” he told party delegates, drawing applause from supporters at the gathering.

Anti-corruption rhetoric amid Nigeria’s governance challenges

Atiku’s remarks come at a time when corruption, insecurity and governance reforms remain dominant issues in Nigeria’s political discourse. Successive administrations have faced criticism over their handling of public funds, as well as allegations of weak enforcement against politically exposed individuals.

Analysts say such statements are often aimed at reinforcing public trust, particularly as political parties position themselves ahead of future elections. The ADC, a smaller but increasingly vocal opposition party, has sought to distinguish itself through governance reforms and institutional accountability.

Security concerns and political messaging

By linking corruption with “criminals and terrorists,” Atiku also touched on Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. Armed groups, banditry and insurgency continue to affect several regions, with critics arguing that corruption within institutions has undermined efforts to tackle insecurity.

Political observers note that framing anti-corruption as a security issue reflects a broader narrative within Nigerian politics — that financial mismanagement and weak oversight can directly impact national stability.

ADC’s positioning ahead of future polls

The ADC has in recent years attempted to broaden its appeal, presenting itself as an alternative to Nigeria’s dominant parties. Atiku’s presence at the convention underscores ongoing realignments within the political landscape, as opposition figures explore new platforms.

While it remains unclear what formal role Atiku may play within the party, his speech signals a continued effort to shape the national conversation on governance, transparency and accountability.
