Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai met in Kaduna on Saturday in what observers describe as a strategic opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku said his visit was a show of solidarity following a recent attack on El-Rufai by thugs allegedly sponsored by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.
In a statement, Atiku accused the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu of posing “the greatest risk to democracy since the return of civilian rule,” describing it as “a full-blown dictatorship.” He added that the meeting resolved to work towards “rescuing Nigeria” through the ADC as a viable political platform.
El-Rufai, in a video released after the meeting, echoed Atiku’s concerns, alleging that the Tinubu administration was running “a dictatorship worse than military rule.” He called on Nigerians to unite and ensure Tinubu’s removal at the polls in 2027.
Both men are among key opposition figures now aligning with the ADC in preparation for the next general elections.
