Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has warned that divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State could jeopardise President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects in 2027.
Speaking in Abuja, the lawmaker urged party members to set aside personal differences, forgive past grievances, and unite behind the President. He cautioned that continued rivalry between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, posed the greatest threat to APC’s cohesion in the state.
The dispute, which erupted after the 2023 elections, has centred on control of party structures and political appointments. Although a truce was brokered last year by the Tiv Traditional Council, tensions remain, with both camps trading accusations of marginalisation.
“If we as the APC family unite ahead of 2027, President Tinubu will secure a decisive victory in Benue. But disunity will result in abysmal performance,” Agbese said. He stressed that the state had benefited from federal appointments and infrastructure under Tinubu, insisting no sacrifice was too great to ensure his re-election.
He dismissed opposition parties as weak, arguing they could not mount a serious challenge once the APC put its house in order. “Benue will deliver more votes for Asiwaju than in 2023 if we do the right thing,” he declared.
Agbese also reflected on his own legislative journey, confirming he would seek re-election in 2027 following pressure from his constituents. He emphasised his loyalty to both Governor Alia and the SGF, expressing optimism that reconciliation between the two leaders was still achievable.
