Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against verbal or physical attacks on Labour Party leader Peter Obi, urging opposition figures to prioritise unity and issue-based engagement ahead of future elections.
In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku stressed that political competition must not descend into hostility, warning that personal attacks weaken democratic values and distract from the real challenges facing Nigerians. He called on supporters across party lines to embrace tolerance and mutual respect, describing unity among reform-minded forces as essential for national progress.
“Differences in ideology or strategy should never justify hostility,” Atiku said, adding that constructive dialogue remains the cornerstone of credible opposition politics.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the establishment of internal mechanisms aimed at resolving disputes and preventing factional rifts within the ruling party. Party officials said the move is intended to strengthen internal cohesion and ensure discipline as preparations for forthcoming electoral contests intensify.
According to APC sources, the new framework will focus on mediation, reconciliation and early conflict resolution, with party leaders tasked to intervene promptly where disagreements arise. The party said maintaining unity is critical to sustaining governance and delivering on campaign promises.
The parallel developments highlight the growing political activity across party lines as Nigeria’s political actors position themselves ahead of the next election cycle, with appeals for civility and internal stability taking centre stage.
