The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has commenced an indefinite strike action over unpaid salaries. The strike was announced in a letter dated September 11, 2025, addressed to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olubunmi Shittu, and signed by ASUU-FUOYE Chairman, O. A. Fagbuagun, and Financial Secretary, Ngwu Benitho.
The union stated that its action aligns with a national directive from ASUU’s National Executive Council mandating branches to halt academic work if salaries are not paid by the third day of each month. The letter emphasised, “This strike is total, indefinite, and comprehensive. The decision of the national is hereby communicated.”
ASUU-FUOYE warned that the strike would continue until all outstanding salaries are fully paid. The union reiterated that the industrial action is not merely a local decision but a concerted national effort to enforce timely salary payments across Nigerian universities.
This strike follows a long-standing issue of delayed salary payments affecting academic staff, which has led other branches in the country to embark on similar industrial actions, including the University of Jos and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
The union appeals to the university administration and government authorities to resolve the salary payment issues promptly to avoid further disruptions to academic activities.
The strike unfolds amid ongoing concerns about the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing agreements with ASUU and revitalising the quality of Nigerian higher education.ASUU-FUOYE Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries at Federal University Oye-Ekiti
