#Mikel Merino rose like a man possessed to cancel out Trevoh Chalobah’s bullet header as Premier League leaders Arsenal scrapped their way to a gritty 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea in a fiery London derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

The result keeps Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City and six ahead of a Chelsea side that refused to lie down even after Moises Caicedo was sent off for a reckless lunge on Merino just before half-time.

Speaking after the match, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted his side had been given a serious examination.
“We knew it was going to be a proper battle. Even with 10 men, Chelsea showed why they are right up there. We stayed calm, we responded, and in the end we take the point and stay top,” he said.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, whose young team have now gone seven games unbeaten in all competitions, praised his players’ never-say-die attitude.
“I’m proud of the character. Playing almost an hour with 10 men against the best team in the league and coming away with a point   it feels like a victory in many ways,” Maresca told reporters.

The game exploded into life from the first whistle. Referee Michael Oliver brandished seven yellow cards in a bruising opening 45 minutes that saw Martin Zubimendi, Marc Cucurella, Christhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori all go into the book for heavy challenges.

The turning point arrived in the 38th minute when Caicedo caught Merino high on the ankle with a wild tackle. Initially shown yellow, the decision was upgraded to red after VAR intervened – Chelsea’s sixth dismissal of the season across all competitions.

Yet the numerical disadvantage seemed to galvanise the Blues. Just three minutes after the restart, Reece James whipped in a near-post corner and Chalobah leapt highest to glance a superb header across David Raya and into the far corner, sending Stamford Bridge into raptures.

Arsenal’s response was swift. Arteta threw on captain Martin Ødegaard and former Chelsea winger Noni Madueke – who was greeted with a chorus of boos and “Chelsea reject” chants from the home fans.

The substitutes changed the game. On 59 minutes, Bukayo Saka left Cucurella for dead on the right flank before picking out Merino, who powered home a header from six yards for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez then produced a string of world-class saves to deny Saka and Merino again as Arsenal pushed for a winner that never came.

The draw extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 17 matches in all competitions (14 wins, 3 draws) and keeps alive their dream of a first Premier League title since the Invincibles season of 2003/04.

For Chelsea, the point – earned the hard way – lifts them to within six points of the summit and underlines their growing credentials as genuine contenders under Maresca.

Both sides head into the festive period in fine fettle, with Arsenal hosting Manchester United next weekend and Chelsea travelling to Tottenham in another mouth-watering derby.

One thing is clear: the Premier League title race is far from over, and these two London giants look ready to take it all the way.
