A heavy security presence, including an armoured personnel carrier, has been stationed along Zambezi Crescent in Maitama, the location of the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as tensions mount ahead of the planned #OccupyINEC movement.
Security personnel were seen positioned around the area on Thursday, with access routes closely monitored, signalling heightened readiness by authorities amid growing mobilisation online and offline.
The deployment comes as activists and supporters of the protest movement intensify calls for demonstrations around the electoral body’s headquarters, raising concerns about potential confrontations and public safety in Nigeria’s capital.
Officials have yet to issue a formal statement on the scale of the security operation, but the presence of an armoured vehicle and increased patrols underscores the sensitivity surrounding the planned protest.
