Eleven suspects have been arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja in connection with the killing of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, and a security guard.

The defendants were brought before the court on charges bordering on conspiracy and murder, following investigations by law enforcement agencies into the fatal incident. Prosecutors told the court that the suspects allegedly acted in concert to carry out the attack, which also claimed the life of a security operative attached to the premises.

At the arraignment, the prosecution outlined that the offences contravene relevant provisions of Nigeria’s criminal laws applicable in the FCT. The charges were read to the defendants, who are expected to enter their pleas at the next sitting.

Counsel to the prosecution requested that the suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the need to ensure their availability for trial. Defence lawyers, however, urged the court to grant bail, arguing that their clients are presumed innocent under the law.

The presiding judge ordered that the suspects be remanded and adjourned the matter to a later date for the hearing of bail applications and further proceedings.

The killing of Mr Maduagwu has sparked widespread outrage within media circles and among civil society groups, with renewed calls for improved protection for journalists and stronger measures to curb violent crime in the country.
