Joe Aribo has earned public endorsement from interim manager Tonda Eckert after the Nigerian midfielder again made a positive impact off the bench in Southampton’s 3-2 defeat at Millwall on Saturday.

Eckert said he was pleased with Aribo’s contribution, telling reporters: “I am very happy with Joe. He has been excellent every time he has come on, and he is in very good shape.”

Aribo’s role so far this campaign has been largely that of an impact substitute. The 29-year-old has accumulated only five league appearances and 98 minutes since the season began in August, but Eckert appears keen to leverage his experience as Southampton seek to convert improved performances into consistent results.

The Millwall match showed both promise and frustration for Saints: a stirring second-half response put them back in the game, yet a stoppage-time winner denied them a draw. Eckert acknowledged the narrow margin of defeat while underlining the importance of squad players such as Aribo: “I think it’s not easy, obviously a big challenge to come on in a game like today, but we are very happy to have him.”

From a tactical perspective, Aribo’s versatility  comfortable as a box-to-box presence or arriving late into the box  gives the caretaker coach different options when games open up. That adaptability helps explain why Eckert trusts him to influence matches despite limited minutes. Match data show Aribo has continued to register useful contributions when introduced.

For Aribo personally, the brief cameo roles present both a challenge and an opportunity. Having been a regular in last season’s campaign, he must now balance patience with urgency if he wants to reclaim a starting shirt and maintain form for potential international duties with the Super Eagles. Observers suggest consistent, high-intensity performances in these cameo appearances will be decisive.
