All Progressives Congress (APC) may be edging towards a strategic compromise as party stakeholders weigh the prospects of settling for Yilwatda and Basiru in key positions ahead of its national convention, sources within the party say.

The high-stakes convention, expected to shape the party’s internal power structure and influence its political direction, has triggered intense consultations among governors, lawmakers and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Quiet consultations, rising calculations

Party insiders familiar with the negotiations say discussions have narrowed around the names of Yilwatda and Basiru as consensus options capable of balancing competing interests within the APC’s diverse blocs.

While the party has yet to make an official announcement, multiple sources suggest that influential stakeholders are pushing for a “unity arrangement” to avoid rancour and the risk of factional divisions that have trailed past conventions.

“The focus is on stability and cohesion,” a senior party member who requested anonymity told reporters. “There is recognition that a divided house could weaken the party ahead of future electoral contests.”

Zoning, alliances and strategic interests

Deliberations are also said to revolve around zoning considerations and geopolitical balancing — long-standing features of internal negotiations within major Nigerian political parties. The APC leadership is believed to be keen on maintaining equilibrium among regions while consolidating support across its strongholds.

Analysts say the outcome of the convention could significantly affect the party’s organisational strength, policy coordination and electoral preparedness.

“The APC convention is not just about party offices; it is about the direction of governance and political alliances moving forward,” a political analyst in Abuja said.

Avoiding internal fractures

The APC has in the past grappled with internal disputes stemming from leadership contests. Observers note that the decision to settle for consensus candidates, if confirmed, may be aimed at preventing protracted legal battles or parallel conventions — scenarios that have affected other political parties in Nigeria.

As preparations intensify, party members and political watchers await formal communication from the APC leadership on the final list of candidates and the timetable for the convention.

For now, the emerging signals suggest a carefully managed power calculus — one designed to project unity, preserve influence and position the ruling party strongly for the political battles ahead.
