Fresh political intrigue has emerged in Imo State following reports that the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has screened Governor Hope Uzodinma for a possible 2027 senatorial bid representing Imo West.

The development has intensified conversations around the state’s political future, particularly the potential transition that could follow if Uzodinma secures victory in the January 2027 National Assembly election.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional framework, a successful Senate bid would require the governor to vacate office upon being sworn into the upper chamber in June 2027 — roughly six to seven months before the completion of his tenure in January 2028. In such a scenario, the deputy governor would assume leadership for the remainder of the term.

Political observers say the move could reshape succession dynamics within the ruling party in Imo, while also positioning Uzodinma for continued influence at the national level after his governorship.

Neither the APC leadership nor the Imo State Government has officially commented on the growing speculation surrounding the reported senatorial screening.
