Authorities in Anambra State have launched a robust security operation to ensure a peaceful and secure bye-election process across the state on Saturday, with police vowing to protect voters and maintain order.
The high-stakes bye-elections, set to fill a Senate seat in Anambra South Senatorial District and a state House of Assembly seat in Onitsha North 1, have prompted an unprecedented deployment of police personnel and resources. The Anambra State Police Command announced a strategic lockdown of known flashpoint areas to prevent disruptions and safeguard the electoral process.
In a statement released Saturday, police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga detailed the operation, saying, “Massive deployment of personnel and operational assets is underway across identified flashpoints to ensure comprehensive security coverage before, during, and after the elections.” The measures aim to reinforce the state’s security framework and guarantee a credible, hitch-free voting process.
Leading the charge is Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Godwin Eze, the supervisory officer overseeing the elections. Eze reassured residents, urging them to exercise their civic rights without fear. “We are committed to providing adequate security throughout this exercise,” he said. “I encourage the people of Anambra to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security personnel, and vote without intimidation.”
The police have emphasized their commitment to neutrality and professionalism, vowing to protect lives and property throughout the election period. With tensions often running high during electoral contests in the region, authorities are leaving nothing to chance to ensure a peaceful outcome.
