Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim did not hold back after his team’s loss to Everton, admitting that the defeat was deserved despite enjoying a one-man advantage for most of the match.
The remarks, reported by BBC Sport on Tuesday, followed United’s shock 1-0 home defeat in a Premier League encounter that left fans frustrated and stunned.
Things took a strange turn at Old Trafford when Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was shown a red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane, leaving the visitors a man down for more than 70 minutes. Yet United still failed to take control and were punished.
Speaking after the match, Amorim gave a brutally honest verdict on his players.
“They were the better team. We deserved to lose,” he said. “Twenty minutes in the game, red card for the opponent. We need to win this game no matter what.”
He also expressed disappointment with the attitude of his squad on a night when the atmosphere at Old Trafford was expected to lift the team.
“Old Trafford was there saying ‘we are all here to give a big step up’ and I felt that we were not ready,” he said. “Again, these five weeks, when everyone is praising our evolution, I’m always saying the same things. We are not even near what we’re supposed to be in this club.”
The defeat adds to the pressure on a United side that underwent heavy investment during the last transfer window, spending around £250m in an attempt to rebuild after finishing 15th the previous season.
The club now sits 10th on the table, grouped with Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Liverpool, but only three points away from the Champions League positions. Despite that narrow margin, performances continue to raise concerns about consistency and mentality.
